How tracks work

What garage door track repair involves

Garage door track repair is about getting the door's path back to straight and level. A sectional door rides on rollers set into two steel tracks, one on each side. The tracks run vertically up the sides of the opening, curve through a radius, and continue horizontally along the ceiling. They are fastened to the wall framing and ceiling with brackets, and they have to be parallel, plumb and the right distance apart, or the rollers bind and pop out.

A garage door off track usually happened for a reason. The most common are a vehicle bumping the door or the track, a snapped cable that let one side drop, loose bracket bolts that let a track drift, or a roller that wore out and jumped. Sometimes a track was bent slightly years ago and the door has been rubbing it ever since. Rust at the bottom of a vertical track, where moisture collects, can weaken the metal too.

If your door came off the track, do not try to run it up or down and do not use the opener. Forcing a door that is partly out of its track can bend the track further, crack panels, and drop one side. Keep clear, leave it where it is, and tell us what the door looks like. A cable problem often travels with a track problem, and cable repair is something we check at the same visit.

Track diagnosis

What we check on a bent or loose track

Track straightness and spacing

We check that both vertical tracks are plumb and the horizontal runs are level, with the right gap for the rollers. Slight bends can often be corrected. A crushed or kinked track gets replaced.

Brackets and fasteners

Loose bolts and cracked brackets let a track move. We tighten what is sound and replace what is not, fastening into solid framing.

Rollers and hinges

A worn or chipped roller can climb out of the track. We check each roller and the hinges that hold it, and swap out the failed ones.

Cables and springs

A door off track may have broken a cable or strained the springs. We look at both before the door is reset so the repair holds.

Panel damage

Once the door is back in the track, we check the panels and the top panel for cracks or bends, because a damaged panel stops the door from tracking cleanly.

How a garage door off track repair goes

  1. 01

You tell us how the door looks

Which side dropped, whether you hear grinding, and whether a vehicle touched the door. This helps us plan what to bring.

  2. 02

We come out and check the damage

Our uniformed technicians look at the tracks, rollers, cables and panels, and explain what they found before starting.

  3. 03

We explain the repair and the price

You get an upfront quote before any work begins. Track straightening costs less than replacing a track or a panel, and the price depends on the parts, the door size and the damage.

  4. 04

We reset the door and test it

We straighten or replace the track, secure the brackets, seat the rollers and run the door through full cycles by hand and with the opener. A track repair is often done in one visit.

Questions

Questions about an off-track garage door

Can I push my garage door back into the track myself?
It is not a good idea. The springs hold the door's weight under tension, and a door that is partly out of its track can fall or twist. A forced door can also bend the track and damage panels. Leave it and let us reset it.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a bent track?
Light bends and loose brackets are usually a repair. A track that is creased, rusted through or crushed is better replaced, because a repaired kink tends to catch the rollers again. We tell you which applies when we quote.
What does garage door track repair cost?
The price depends on whether we are straightening and tightening or replacing parts, how many tracks or rollers are involved, and the size and weight of the door. We give you an upfront quote before any work begins.
How do I tell if the problem is the track or the cable?
A cable problem shows as one side hanging lower than the other with slack cable. A track problem shows as rollers visibly out of the rail or grinding. They often come together, so we check both. If it turns out the door needs more, we may suggest a new door, but only when a repair would not hold.
Is it safe to use the door while it waits for repair?
No. Do not open or close an off-track door by hand or with the opener. It can drop suddenly, and the opener can burn out trying to lift it. Keep people, pets and vehicles clear of the door.
What should I have ready when I call?
Know which side is out, whether you hear grinding or saw the door move, and whether a car touched it. A photo of the track helps if you can take one without standing under the door.
Is track work covered by a warranty?
Our repairs and installations are backed by a parts-and-labor warranty. We are also licensed and insured, and locally owned and operated, and we explain the coverage when we give you the quote.
